A lovely essay. It’s on Alyssa Liu’s joyful gold medal performance in figure skating but widely applicable.
Billionaires are siphoning all the money out of the economy so we’re all desperate to do whatever nonsense tasks they want us to do at their whims. This dystopian setup might give those few people temporary gains that seem impressive. But it ruins society to live that way. Slavery may help concentrate wealth but it makes every aspect of society worse, stifles innovation and progress, and ultimately the decline of society. Growing a healthy community means taking the wealth the billionaires stole from us and reinvesting it in everyone else. When people have their basic needs met, they can achieve wonders. The wonders are self determined but supported by community that cares what happens to each other.
